Uremia is a very serious condition. With uremia, you may suffer from a series
of complications. Well, what are the complications of uremia?
Cardiovascular disease
A small part of patients are likely to experience cardiovascular diseases
including heart failure, arrhythmia. Those are closely associated with high
blood pressure, acidosis, hyperkalemia, water retention etc.
Skin problems
Itching skin is the most common symptom of uremia skin problems. It is likely
to be caused by the stimulation of harmful substances. In addition, dry skin,
yellow skin and change of skin color are caused by the excessive urochrome.
Digestive problems
Nausea, vomit and loss of appetite indicate digestive damage caused by urease
which will break down urea into ammonia. The ammonia stimulates mucosa, leading
to inflammation of digestive tract. Patients are often accompanied by bleeding
of digestive tract.
Respiratory system diseases
Patients with uremia are prone to develop respiratory system diseases.
Pulmonary edema is a common symptom which is associated with heart failure,
hypoproteinemia, water retention etc.
Nerve problems
Patients with uremia often experience dizziness, headache, fatigue, decline
of memory and understanding. With the condition worse, other serious symptoms
occur including fatigue, spasm, sleepiness, coma, etc.
Uremia is a complication of end-stage renal failure. Since it is a severe and
irreversible condition, prognosis may be poor if it is not treated properly.
There are two factors which can affect prognosis of uremia. The underlying
kidney disease is the first factor. Meanwhile, the risk factors and
complications are the second factor that may influence the prognosis. If
hypertension occurs, prognosis becomes worst. In order to prevent these
complications, the patient’s condition should be kept controlled and stable.
